Questions people ask

The things most people want to know before booking. If your question isn't here, bring it to a free consultation, or just ask by email.

What is IFS, actually?

Internal Family Systems. The short version: your mind works like a committee, with different parts that want different things, and all of them are trying to protect you in their own (sometimes unhelpful) ways. In IFS we get to know those parts instead of fighting them. It’s deep and challenging work that really helps you get the root of your issues by diving directly into your subconscious. There’s a longer, better explanation on the parts work page.

Do you take insurance? What does therapy cost?

Yes. I’m in network with several plans through Headway, including Aetna, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Carelon Behavioral Health, and Quest Behavioral Health. Headway checks your exact coverage before your first session, so you’ll know your cost upfront.

Paying privately? A first session is $150 and ongoing sessions are $100. Booking links for both paths live on the schedule page.

Where do you see clients?

Everywhere in the state of Maryland. All sessions are 100% virtual over a secure video platform, so “the office” is wherever you’re comfortable. The one rule (it’s a licensing thing) is that you need to be physically in Maryland during your session. Your couch counts. So does your parked car, which is a more popular option than you’d think.

What happens in a free consultation?

A fifteen minute chat, video or phone. I want you to get a feel for whether or not I’m a good fit for your needs. You tell me a bit about what brings you in and ask whatever questions you want to. I“ll break down my therapeutic approach. At the end I’ll be honest about whether I’m the right fit. If I’m not, I’ll point you toward someone who is. Let’s see if we vibe!

What's a first session like?

It’ll mostly just be a casual conversation. I’ll ask about what lead you to therapy, your history, relationship dynamics, and a get a broad understanding of your background. You set the pace. You don’t have to share everything in week one. The parts of you that want to hold some things back are allowed at the table too. Of course, if you’re really clamoring for a dive deep right away, there’s room for that as well.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. What you say in session stays in session. However, I am a “Mandated Reporter” in certain instances and I’d rather you hear them upfront: -If there’s a serious risk of harm to you or someone else -If a child or vulnerable adult is being abused, -If a court orders records. I also just want to make clear that even if you disclose past child abuse to me as an adult, that is something I am required to report. Outside of those situations, everything you say stays with me.
